On blogs
Bloggers won praise from some quarters during last year's presidential campaign, especially for breaking the story that sank Dan Rather. The story behind that story, of course, was President Bush's Air National Guard service.
Journalist Corey Pein, who investigated the Bush-Rather story for Columbia Journalism Review, has written an interesting perspective on blogs. Blogs is the title, and Pein's commentary was published in the lastest issue of Global Journalist, the magazine of the International Press Institute.

You know, I rather think the man is right.
I don't know if you've ever read Blog : Understanding the Information Reformation That's Changing Your World by Hugh Hewitt (if you haven't I wouldn't highly recommend it unless you're looking to do research on the political blog trend... and in that case, I'd give you my copy because it was the biggest waste of $20 I've ever spent), but in short, my evaluation of the book was that it was written by a conservative self-appointed blogging expert who's confused expressing an opinion with journalism, in short, a bunch of hogwash but I figured I'd bring it up because it talked about the "Rathergate" scandal.. but from the persepective of a blogger patting other bloggers on the back for a job well done.
One of the things that's always interested me is the relationship between blogging and journalism... particularly political blogging and journalism. Quite honestly, I think that blogging and journalism can (and for the most part do) have a rather symbiotic relationship. Without the media (television, radio, newspaper, etc) delivering it to them, most political blogs would be contentless, the blogger's reliance on the media is extremely heavy. I believe that bloggers can help to keep the media accountable for what they report and how they report it (though the potential for slander of the media also exists). However, I don't think bloggers should ever be confused with journalists. Bloggers are generally unpaid "talking heads" shouting from their soap box... They may or may not be educated about what they speak, they may or may not be biased. Journalists are paid professionals that are sent out to retrieve facts about events and issues and report about them without bias (theoretically... we all know that most media sources either lean to the right or to the left, and we generally know who they are... a slight bias is unavoidable, and as long as it's identified as such and those reporting are striving to make it as slight a bias as possible, is acceptable in my mind). Bloggers are important. Journalists are important. But they are not one in the same. (With the exception, I suppose, of a journalist who happens to keep a blog, but one would expect that the decorum of the person on their blog and in whatever they write professionally would be slightly different).
I tend to agree that journalists should ignore much of what the talking heads of the Internet say about whatever... I don't think that they should ignore everything, but they should at least be mindful that many bloggers are egotists who fancy themselves of far greater importance than they actually are...

Jeez, Mike, get a clue.
A story about Dan Rather's obession with bringing down President Bush going with a biased Bush-hating source with documents that were only copies--forged ones at that--and not mentioning Charles Johnson of the weblog "Little Green Footballs" is stupid.
Mr. Johnson is the guy who broke the story that the documents were produced using Microsoft Word technology that wasn't around when they were purportedly written in the early 1970s.
The story you reference has just about everything wrong.
It's bloggers factchecking the mainstream media, not the MSM taking its cue from bloggers. You know, sort of like David and Goliath.
It's not as though a conservative cabal brought the Rather-led allegations down; rather, it was his own incompetence and the media's, ahem, liberal bias that kept the nonstory a story.
